What is

ECZEMA

Eczema is a common skin condition that usually begins before your child is one year old. The affected skin is dry, red and itchy. Sometimes these areas of skin can become cracked, weepy and then scab over. It is a prevalent medical condition, has been found irrespective of age and gender.

However, there are many ways to keep eczema under control and help your child feel more comfortable.

Symptoms

  • Babies with eczema usually have a red, dry rash on their face. The rash may be on their scalp, body, arms and legs or behind their ears. The rash is very itchy and may keep them awake at night.
  • In toddlers and older children, the eczema rash is often in the skin creases around the knees, wrists, elbows and ankles
  • In some children the rash can cover their entire body.
  • Adults could suffer from eczema symptoms at their hands, wrists, face, feet, or back of knees. Their skin will appear dry, scaly, or thick.

CAUSES

Eczema can be triggered by a number of things, such as:

  • becoming overheated with clothing, blankets, heaters
  • dryness of the skin
  • Genetic mutation
  • Dysfunction in the immune system
  • viral and other infections

Eczema could be treated by right medication and treatment and could be avoided for future repercussions. Treatment of Eczema is focused on preventing or easing itching that can lead to infection.

Medications

Eczema can be treated by topical corticosteroid creams and ointments that have anti-inflammatory action, immunosuppressants, antibiotics, topical calcineurin inhibitors, antihistamines or injectable biological drugs to control immune response. Barrier repair moisturizers can be prescribed for skin hydration and skin repair

PHOTOTHERAPY OR LIGHT THERAPY

In this therapy we expose patients suffered body area with UVA OR UVB light or sunlamps to reduce the immune responses that initiate eczema. Generally, Patients need a series of lights sessions to cure eczema flare-ups. It is used to treat moderate dermatitis. It depends on patient’s age, and skin condition.

SELF CARE

For children

  • Proper bathing
  • Applying moisturiser
  • Being gentle with your child’s skin

For Adults

  • Proper 7-9 hours’ sleep
  • Relaxing the mind by meditation
  • Yoga and deep breathing
  • Using cold compresses so patients get relieved from itching or soaking in warm water for 20 min.
